This park is one of only three locations (alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda) where the rare and critically endangered Mountain Gorillas can be found. Since the identification of the mountain gorilla subspecies in 1902, its population has faced numerous challenges, including war, hunting, habitat loss, and disease; threats so dire that it was once believed the species could become extinct by the close of the twentieth century.

Additionally, it is one of Uganda’s oldest parks, with origins tracing back to the Ice Ages, and is ecologically the most diverse, boasting nearly 400 plant species and 350 bird species, including 23 endemics of the Albertine Rift. The mammal species found here include the red-tailed chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboon, and, most notably, Bwindi’s renowned inhabitants - the Mountain Gorillas.
