Overview

8 days of Northern Legends: From Samburu’s Specials to the Great Masai Mara.

Wild Stories, Rare Species, Timeless Safari!

Venture into Kenya’s Northern Circuit, where wildlife, culture, and cinematic history converge to offer one of the most fulfilling safari experiences imaginable. Begin in the striking landscapes of Samburu National Reserve, where the rare and beautiful Samburu Special Five—the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx—roam freely. This arid paradise is also a haven for elephants, big cats, and the legendary Kamunyak, the lioness known for adopting a baby oryx in a story that touched the world.

Journey next to the rhino-rich plains of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a beacon of conservation and home to the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Continue south to the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Nakuru, where vibrant birdlife and endangered Rothschild giraffes enrich every view.

Conclude your safari in the iconic Masai Mara National Reserve, a land of rolling savannahs, the Big Five, and the thunderous Great Migration (seasonal). It’s not just a game-viewing experience—it’s a soul-stirring encounter with Africa’s untamed beauty and inspiring stories, from the legacy of Born Free to the heart of modern conservation.

With Seneiya Expeditions, this is more than a safari—it's a journey into the heart of Kenya's wild heritage!

Day 3 Full day in Samburu Game Reserve

Enjoy a full day game viewing in Samburu set against a backdrop of the mighty Mountain Ololokwe. One of the highlights of Samburu is a visit to local villages which give fascinating insights into the Samburu culture and traditions.

The Samburu, often referred to as 'the butterfly people', share a close kinship with the renowned Maasai. As semi-nomadic pastoralists, they migrated into Kenya from Sudan during one of the Nilotic migration waves between 100 and 300 AD.

Similar to the Maasai, the Samburu community has historically centered its social structure around cattle, which serve purposes such as dowries, fines, and ceremonial events. The unique Samburu custom of singing while drawing water has earned the title of the Singing Wells; witnessing this tradition is a remarkable experience in the region.

As the sun slowly drops below the horizon, it leaves the sky streaked in shades of lilac, pink and gold, you will return to the camp where you can share stories of the days magical adventure over dinner.

Day 4 Samburu Game Reserve - Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Enjoy a hearty breakfast, check out and proceed to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, an exclusive reserve that spans 90,000 acres of pristine African wilderness, home to the majestic Big Five and the non-indigenous chimpanzees.

Nestled right on the equator and flanked by Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, it offers stunning views of Africa’s second highest peak and the vibrant Aberdare forest. On your journey, you’ll make a stop at the Equator line in Nanyuki town close to Mt. Kenya, which is a great place to discover the Coriolis Effect.

Arrive at your tented camp in time for check in and lunch. Afternoon game drive in this impressively bio diverse region, home to black rhinos, Grévy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, non-endemic chimpanzee - and the occasional sighting of the elusive African wild dogs. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta guarantees an unforgettable safari experience.

As dusk approaches, the sun gracefully descends beneath the horizon, painting the sky with exquisite golden hues. You will return to the camp, where you can recount tales of the day's enchanting escapades over a delightful dinner.

Optional activities

  • Meet the two last remaining female Northern White Rhinos which Ol Pejeta is particularly famous for. The last Northern White Rhino male died in 2018, effectively rendering the entire sub-species extinct. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to come face to face with these majestic animals
  • Meet a famous Black Rhino, named Baraka, Ol Pejeta’s Rhino ambassador to humans. Baraka is totally blind and can no longer survive in the wild. During this visit, you will be able to hand-feed Baraka and even touch his horn.
  • Visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The sanctuary provides a haven for orphaned, abandoned, and rescued Chimpanzees. Most of them were confiscated from cramped and unnatural living conditions and arrived with horrific injuries from abuse at the hands of humans. It is the only place in Kenya where these great apes can be seen.

Day 5 Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Lake Nakuru National Park

Wake up to the natural sounds of the birds at Ol Pejeta and enjoy breakfast. After that, head to Lake Nakuru National Park, the most well-known of the Great Rift Valley lakes, famous for its stunning birdlife.

This 188 km² park serves as a haven for those with a keen interest in ornithology. Additionally, it provides the chance to observe rhinos, the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, large herds of buffalo, and a plethora of various plains game. Sightings of leopard resting in the branches of acacia trees are common but not on every safari.

The alkaline Lake Nakuru, located within the park, has been designated as a Ramsar Site by the conservation community. Although the iconic flocks of flamingos may be diminished due to recent climatic changes, you will still be treated to views of other species, including pelicans, the African fish eagle, chattering weavers, and many more.

Keep an eye out for wildlife sightings as you drive towards your lodge. Upon arrival, check in and have lunch, then embark on your first game drive in the afternoon. Visit the Baboon Cliff, a prime location for bird watching and game viewing.

After an exhilarating day in the wilderness, your guide will return you to your lodge within the national park in time for a gourmet dinner and a comfortable overnight stay.
